BIOGRAPHY

Francis Fukuyama is a world renowned political scientist and author, perhaps most famous for his works positing the triumph of liberal democracy at the end of the Cold War as the final stage of political evolution, the so called ‘End of History’. His research topics include international political economy, nation-building, democratisation, and international security concerns.

Francis is not merely an author of political science, he also has extensive experience in political field work. He worked for the US Department of State from 1981 to 1982 and served as a delegate to an Egyptian-Israeli conference on Palestinian autonomy. Fukuyama’s interests also extend beyond political science, as more recent works by him have focussed on the role that biotechnology may have to play in human development, and he served on the President’s Council on Bioethics from 2001 to 2005.

Francis is currently the Olivier Nomellini Senior Fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute (FSI) for International Studies and is also the Mosbacher Director of FSI's Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law. He is a professor by courtesy of Stanford University’s Department of Political Science and has held positions at George Mason and Johns Hopkins universities. He is a founding board member of The American Interest, as well as being a member of the American Political Science Association, the Council on Foreign Relations, and the Pacific Council for International Affairs.

A prolific author, Francis’s works are popular with both academics and the public at large. Whilst best known for his breakout work The End of History and the Last Man (1992), he has authored many other works including The Origins of Political Order: From Prehuman Times to the French Revolution (2011) and the upcoming Identity: The Demand for Dignity and the Politics of Resentment (2018).
