Michael is a serial tech entrepreneur and investor.
He is best-known for being the co-founder and co-CEO of Calm, the meditation, sleep and mental wellness app.
Calm is the #1 app for meditation and sleep, with over 35 million downloads to date. It was named by Apple as the 2017 iPhone App of the Year; by Google Play as an “Editors’ Choice” in 2018; and found by a major study of 200,000 iPhone users to be “the world’s happiest app” – the single app that left users feeling happiest from spending time on it. It has received over 200,000 five star app reviews on either Google Play or the App Store.
Michael’s first business was Firebox.com, the online retailer of gadgets, games and gifts, which he founded in 1998 with Tom Boardman. Among the products they invented was the Shot Glass Chess Set.
In 2004 he launched Mind Candy to create new types of online entertainment. Its first major hit was Moshi Monsters, an online world for kids that grew to tens of millions of registered players around the world. In 2011 the game expanded from the screen into the offline world with a wide range of new products such as toys, books, magazines, trading cards, videos games, music and a film.
Michael founded Calm in 2012.
Michael has been immersed in tech and startup for over 20 years. He is an inspirational speaker on the digital economy, disruptive innovation and the entrepreneurial mindset.
He is also outspoken about the need to reduce the stigma around mental health, both in our private and work lives. These are issues he is tackling head-on through his pioneering work at Calm.
