Here’s a fascinating clip of Professor Anand Menon, Director of UK In A Changing Europe, discussing their recent poll of British attitudes to Brexit on the BBC. A few key points:
(i) Only 1 in 8 Britons feels European.
This is because Britain has always seen EU membership as a transactional means for economic gain. It has never seen itself as part of a political movement of European integration.
(ii) The British people are feeling more negative about Brexit and the way the government is handling Brexit, but this doesn’t mean those who voted leave think they voted the wrong way.
(iii) The evidence suggests that social liberalism vs. social conservatism is a major divide in British politics, but until the referendum there was no way for this to be expressed politically.
